Desktop configuration

Loving ConfluenceFX so far - this seems like a great tool for driving user adoption.

Our main goal is to ensure users keep up with News posts. Is there a way (aside from the desktop UI buttons) to restrict the Activity Reader so it only shows News posts? We probably dont need to see updates to pages or spaces etc.....and (in fact) seeing too many updates will annoy our users. So we'd prefer to limit it to News posts.

Thanks,

Sean

    Sean,

Can you be a little more specific about this. I'd suggest you create a new Jira here where you describe your needs, particularly about the Activity reader and the notifications, how you would like them to behave, etc...
We'll have a look and possibly include it as a new improvement in our roadmap for a future release.

    Best regards.

Firstly, I should preface this by saying we love ConfluenceFX and see it as a key tool to assist with driving user adoption of Confluence within our company. However, our users are complaining about seeing too many notifications, particularly when someone is drag/dropping piles of attachments into the wiki. Our users really just want notifications for News posts. This would be global i.e. they would receive notifications for any News post to which they have read permissions. They might also want notifications for page updates, but ONLY when "Minor change? (no notifications will be sent) is NOT ticked.
It would be great if this could be set somewhere in the settings.

It's the familiar problem of balancing information needs against the need to keep noise to a minimum. To much noise and people stop listening (and turn off the application).

    Thanks

    Sean

I understand this is a big need for you. I need to target a little bit your need though :

      • Would you like to only restrict notifications or also the items displayed in the timeline of the Activity Reader module?
      • Do you want, as an admin, to restrict notifications to only news, pages, ..., or let users decide which notifications they want. May be both?
      • If you restrict the notifications to only be for example News (admin or user side), then you'll only receive News for the whole instance of Confluence. Same for pages, etc... Is it what you're looking for?

Concerning pages, you shouldn't receive notifications if the Minor change is ticked, it's already the case in this version of ConfluenceFx.

      Thanks,
      Steeve

        Hi Steeve,
Thanks as always for your rapid response.
        1. We'd like to restrict notifications globally via admin/server side. Just notifications though, not the desktop client. If this was too hard for you to accomplish, we'd be fine with the restriction settings being available per-user in the desktop client config, particularly if it was possible to configure defaults in the client installer via something like an ini file.
        2. Users should be able to decide for themselves what they want to see in the desktop client as per the standard GUI. However, as previously mentioned some time ago, we'd love it if we could control the default Activity Reader view (which we would set to be the News tab, global) instead of the current default Activity Reader tab (which is ALL)

        Thanks,

        Sean

      Hi Peter,

First, you need to install the AMF connector with the installer provided in the archive. (run the installer-console.bat file if you are on Windows, installer-console.sh file if on Mac).
You'll need to provide the WEB-INF folder location to the installer. On an evaluation version of Confluence, on Windows, the path should be something like that :

      C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Atlassian Evaluation\work\confluence\3.3.3\webapps\confluence\WEB-INF

If you're using another platform than Windows, you'll have information about the deployed folder of Confluence in the log console whilst running the evaluation binary.

After installing the AMF Connector on the filesystem, you need to put the backport-util-concurrent.jar file into the lib folder where you've installed Confluence (likely at the following location) :

      C:\Program Files (x86)\Atlassian\Confluence Evaluation 3.3.3\lib

      Run your Confluence instance.
In the administration console of Confluence, you'll see a new section called "ConfluenceFx".
You need to add a license key in the "license details" section (demo license available here): http://lab.kapit.fr/users/license/demo/createdemolicense.action?productId=NVYFGNUM02YLFDKKGADOVZCDT7Y04XQM

Then install all the plugins in the plugin console (I think you already did that since you have the Confluence Desktop application running).

Everything should work then. In case something goes wrong, head to the Administrator's guide or the FAQ

Let me know if it's okay with you.

      Cheers,
      Steeve

    Hi Steeve,

the Desktop App is really great!!

Now I want to install it on a Notebook with Confluence 3.3 rc2 on Win7 for a customer presentation, but after the setup.bat (with no error msg) there is no entry under "plugins" in the admin page of conbfluence.

    Any hints?
I think I've tried everything so far...

    Thanks in advance,

      Hi Peter,

Could you please raise an issue on our Jira – so that we don't make this forum page too huge – with anything that could help me help you such as the following information:

      • is it the same Confluence 3.3 as your previous installation?
      • is it an evaluation version of Confluence, a standalone or an EAR/WAR version of Confluence?
      • the path you've used when browsing to find the WEB-INF directory of Confluence
      • a screenshot of your WEB-INF directory
      • a screenshot of your administration page, so that I can view the left panel that should show the ConfluenceFx section
      • a screenshot of your plugins console
      • your web.xml file as an attachment so that I check it
      • your $confluencedata/logs/atlassian-confluence.log file where there could be some errors.

I guess that's all, put everything you can

      Steeve
